Salam,

Many Christians claims that the Quran at Surah 10:94 tells Muslims to ask People of Book that is Christians and Jews if they are in doubt about their Quran. This means according to the Christians and Jews, Muslims have to make reference to them based on the verse as people who received the scriptures earlier. What is stated is that in Surah 10:94 So, if you are in doubt, (O Muhammad), about that which We have revealed to you, then ask those who have been reading the Scripture before you. The truth has certainly come to you from your Lord, so never be among the doubters

If one read in earnest the above verse, one can see in actual fact the verse contained two sentences which have to be approached astutely. The basic concept of the content of the above verse at Surah 10:94 is actually to assess the level of confidence of the Prophet in particular and the Muslims in general in believing on their own scripture the Quran. If the Prophet or a Muslim is a doubter in his own book the Quran, based on the first sentence of the verse of Surah 10:94 which says “So, if you are in doubt, about that which We have revealed to you, then ask those who have been reading the Scripture before you,” If one is a doubter of his Quran then, he will logically ask the people who have been reading the scriptures before him it can be the Christians or the Jews with their respective scriptures  the Bible or the Torah.

On the contrary, the Prophet and true Muslims who have no hesitancy on the Quran as the truth from Allah will not be of the doubters, and thus they will not be in the category of those who will ask those who have been reading the scriptures before them for the simple reason as the next sentence being quoted in the same Surah 10:94 is “The truth has certainly come to you from your Lord, so never be among the doubters.” So from the Surah 10:94 one have the option to be among the doubters or among the believers of the Quran!

Furthermore, based on evidences in other parts of the Quran, the Prophet Muhammad (Pbuh) was never in doubt whatever of the truth sent to him of the Quran and also of those who believed with him. Thus, they will never be and have not been in the category of those who dispute or of those who ask anything from people who have been reading the Scriptures before them whether it being the Jews or the Christians as they are confident the Quran is the Truth over previous scriptures. It is the Quran that contained the message of truth as it is stated in Surah 3:60 The truth is from your Lord, so be not of the disputers. And the Prophet Muhammad and  true Muslims with knowledge will obey what is being commanded in Surah 3:60 quoted above and of Surah 13:37 And thus have We revealed it, a true judgment in Arabic, and if you follow their low desires after what has come to you of knowledge, you shall not have against Allah any guardian or a protector.

The Prophet Muhammad was never in anyway doubtful of the truth of his religion and had never consult anything from any Jew or Christian for any matter on religion, all have been received by inspiration from Allah as stated in Surah 10:104-109 Say: “O ye men! If ye are in doubt as to my religion, I worship not what ye worship, other than Allah. But I worship Allah – Who will take your souls at death: I am commanded to be of the Believers, “And further (thus): ‘set thy face towards religion with true piety, and never in any wise be of the Unbelievers; ‘Nor call on any, other than Allah. Such will neither profit thee nor hurt thee: if thou dost, behold! thou shalt certainly be of those who do wrong.’ If Allah do touch thee with hurt, there is none can remove it but He: if He do design some benefit for thee, there is none can keep back His favour: He cause it to reach whomsoever of His servants He please. And He is the Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.  Say: “O ye men! Now Truth hath reached you from your Lord! those who receive guidance, do so for the good of their own souls; those who stray, do so to their own loss: and I am not (set) over you to arrange your affairs.” Follow thou the inspiration sent unto thee, and be patient and constant, till Allah do decide: for He is the best to decide.

It was only the wish of the disbelievers that the Prophet invent something else for himself other than the inspiration sent to him but he did not lose his focus as stated in Surah 7:203 And when you bring them not a revelation they say: Why do you not forge it? Say: I only follow what is revealed to me from my Lord; these are clear proofs from your Lord and a guidance and a mercy for a people who believe. Furthermore, it is stated for believers not be of the doubters but to believe in the truth in Surah 47:2-3 But those who believe and work deeds of righteousness, and believe in the (Revelation) sent down to Muhammad – for it is the Truth from their Lord, He will remove from them their ills and improve their condition. This because those who reject Allah follow vanities, while those who believe follow the Truth from their Lord: Thus, does Allah set forth for men their lessons by similitudes.

The other evidence and criteria that the Prophet Muhammad and Muslims will not ask or refer to the people who have been reading previous scriptures is that the Quran is the “guardian” or “supervisor” over previous scriptures in whatever truth there is left in those scriptures as stated in Surah 5:48 To thee We sent the Scripture in truth, confirming the scripture that came before it, and guarding (Muhaiminan) it in safety: so judge between them by what Allah hath revealed, and follow not their vain desires, diverging from the Truth that hath come to thee.

So, there is no necessity to ask the people who have been reading previous scriptures if one is a believer and not a doubter of the Quran as there is also a guaranty from Allah that the Quran is free of crookedness and it is a protected book from falsehood –

Surah 41:42 No falsehood can approach it from before or behind it: It is sent down by One Full of Wisdom, Worthy of all Praise.

Surah 15:9 We have, without doubt, sent down the Message; and We will assuredly guard it (from corruption).
